The woman was stabbed eight times by the man, who had a history of sexist violence and was eventually arrested, but the involvement of the minors stopped the attack and saved her life.

In Estepona (Málaga, 71,925 residents), a 48-year-old man was detained after stabbing his 42-year-old ex-wife eight times. To attack the victim with a knife, the man waited for her outside his front door. According to police sources, he did so in front of their two youngest children, who were able to intervene "and prevent their father from achieving his goal" of killing her. Shortly thereafter, officers from the National Police arrested the attacker, who had a long history with the police, about 400 metres from the apartment. He had just been released from prison and will appear in court on Thursday. The woman has been admitted to the Costa del Sol Hospital in a serious but stable condition while she waits for further development.

According to inquiry sources, the suspected attacker has a lengthy history of police encounters for a variety of reasons. Four of these were caused by incidents of sexist violence that occurred between June 2019 and August 2020. Additionally, they stressed that the individual had returned to prison after being released in November. Up until the start of this year, the victim who had reported him had legal protection.

The incidents happened just after 8 p.m. on Monday. According to the National Police, the man was waiting for her to return home outside the entrance of her house on Calle Extremadura, in the historic centre of Estepona. He entered the house with her when her ex-partner showed up. Then, after pulling a knife from his pocket, he stabbed her eight times in the back. When the girls entered the house at the same moment, they started screaming and begging for help. Eventually, they were able to convince their father to stop attacking them and leave the house. They saved their mother's life.

As soon as they saw the woman injured, the neighbours dialled 112 Andalusia Emergency. The 42-year-old victim was rushed to Costa del Sol Hospital after an on-site response team found she had suffered multiple stab wounds. Though no longer in danger, she is stable and still awaiting evolution.

The area of the incident was also approached by numerous patrols from local police and national police. The search for the accused attacker was then initiated by several of these agents. Despite his attempts to evade capture, they found him about 400 meters from the residence. He had cut his forearm with the knife and was bleeding. His wound was treated before he was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder. He has a court date this Thursday.
